Once Upon A Time In Mexico....

Once upon a time Mr. Snoots and I had dreams of moving and retiring in the sleepy beach town called Sayulita, Narayit, Mexico which is just north of Puerto Vallarta. One of my very first posts was about a house I wanted in Narayit. Those dreams have ended.

There was an article in yesterday's Dallas Morning News by a special correspondent in Mexico and the news is worse than ever. Here is part of the article and you can read the rest HERE:

"Best known for its sleepy beach towns that dot its coastline, Mexico's western state of Narayit is now facing the kind of brutal drug violence that has faced the Texas-Mexico border for years.

Narayit is located just north (approximately 45 miles) of Puerto Vallarta, a destination for many Americans where year round sunshine nourishes beaches and ample fields of tomatoes, pinto beans and tobacco.

But, on Friday, Narayit Gov. Ney Gonzales Sanchez abruptly ended the school year 15 days early as frantic parents expressed concerns about an unusual spike in violence, including a shootout at a local shopping center parking lot.

So far this year, the number of killings in Narayit has topped 100 - more than in the last four years combined, with 30 killings in just the last week...." You can read the rest of the article HERE.

Until now, it seemed that the only resort town experiencing major drug cartel killings has been Acapulco. That has just taken a nasty turn and in my opinion, there is not currently any place in Mexico that I would go for a vacation. I love Mexico and I love going to Mexico. I've been going there since I was 12 and I don't enjoy not being able to go there any more. I love the people, the food, the scenery, the ocean and everything else except for the drug cartels who are killing off their own people. Aside from the drug people, the Mexican people are generally happy, gentle souls. I miss seeing and being with them. I can't even go see my old roommate from boarding school who was born, raised, and still lives in Mexico in a lovely little mountain town called San Miguel de Allende. I had planned on visiting her this year, but that won't be happening. San Miguel has had their fair share of kidnappings and killings as well.

But hey, if you're really adventurous, go right ahead. At least you can be confident in the fact that I will not be there. I can hardly wait for the drug cartel criminals to become illegal citizens of our country! Now, won't that be a fun ride for us all? Yee haw. Yee NOT.

That's dreadful! Tho I wonder how many drug related murders happen in cities in other countries...we might be living with a false sense of security!

That is so, so sad.

What a pity. I love Mexico too. Love Mexico City especially. Now it's considered very dangerous. The pathetic thing is that what's causing the drug violence is the demand... and that's almost 100% US driven.

When we lived 90 minutes from the border (before coming here), Mexico was off limits to us-- My husband was no longer allowed to play at Puerto Penasco or attend the LDS temple over in Juarez. Now, I wouldn't go if it was allowed, risk-taking like that doesn't appeal to me.
