More Decor Lessons Learned.... At A Cost
Mr. Snooty's grandmother left us two wonderful club chairs from the 1920's but they had certainly seen better days. So, I sent the chair (the icky green chair that was in the worst condition) to the upholstery guy. He said that if I brought my own fabric, he'd only charge $69.00 per yard to re-cover my chair. Okay. Good. So, I took him 9 yards of the fabric I'd chosen (which cost me approximately $130.00).
Several weeks went by and I heard nothing from him. Hmmm... I began to worry. Just as I was about to call him, he called me to tell me the chair was indeed ready. I was overjoyed until I asked him what I owed him. I was thinking around $650.00, at the tops. I was so wrong.
The upholstery guy then informed me that it would be $1,163.00. Apparently, he rebuilt the entire chair, which I'm certain I never discussed with him. However, I was stuck with paying the price, if I wanted my chair back. The chair had broken springs underneath, a broken arm (which needed replacing) and needed new cushions for the seat and the seat-back as well. Ka-Ching!
So, after getting over the initial shock, we forked over the money, with reluctance. However, once they delivered the chair, we were totally thrilled with it. Although, for that price, I could have gotten a really amazing new chair, but I won't split hairs over this. I won't think about regrets, but I will think about learning to reupholster furniture on my own. I'm hoping there is a class for this somewhere....
For some reason, my camera refuses to allow a good picture of this chair, but it looks totally wonderful in person. I think.
Anyway, let my faux pas guide you down this road. Always ASK, before having any piece re-upholstered, if there are any anticipated problems or extra expenses. That said, if I have to keep living in this house, then it's going to be the way I want it to be, and I'm still light years away from that point...
