But I Thought This Was Only For Old People....

Last week I went for my bone density test and am told that I have Osteoporosis. Holy Crap Batman! I thought that was only something old people got, then I remembered. I am getting old. When did this happen? Apparently, this happened while I was busy taking care of everyone else. While the kids were growing up, I have to admit I didn't take very good care of myself. I was always so busy, that I attended eveyone's needs but my own. I think most women tend to do the same thing. So, now I'm beginning to see the results of my folly.

I was under the false impression that I was getting enough calcium from my daily vitamin and the foods I eat. Let me just tell you right now that is the wrong thing to think. It's especially wrong to think if you're getting ready to go through menpause or are in the middle hell of it. You need to double up on calcium because 90% of post menopausal women have Osteoporosis. Hmm.... Evidently, I wasn't paying attention. I should have already known this. Maybe I knew it and merely ignored it, which is highly likely. The only good news being that I am POST menopausal.

You see, being immature allows my brain to think I'm still as young as my mind. Screeeeeech! So why isn't my body behaving in accordance? It's called the nature of things and I don't think Mother Nature likes me very much. Her gravity is starting to make all my saggable body parts droop and now this Osteoporosis thing. When will all this craziness end? Why didn't I start working out like Madonna when I still looked good? Why wasn't I paying attention? Why didn't someone slap me into consciousness?

Anyone have a spare Xanax? I think I need one....

I don't have any xanax, but I do have some calcium! Did they say anything about slowing the osteo you have? I'm always curious about that. Can you take calcium now? Will exercise help now? Inquiring minds want to know!!

Calcium AND vitamin D! Are you going to take fosamax or boniva? I hear they do really well if you are diligent. My mother-in-law suffered horribly with hers but they didn't diagnose her until she had already broken her back. You were smart to have that test....

I soo hear ya Snooty! I had full blast sudden onset menopause when I was 36..and then went several years without hormones at all! I'm still not good about taking my calcium now and I'm only 45...I'm worried about what my bones will be like when I'm 60..65..70..yikes!

I think we need calcium fortified wine!

I will be diligent with calcium & vitamin D (which makes the calcium work more efficiently), but they have not yet put me on either of the big meds for osteo. So, I guess it's not all that bad, right?

Meanwhile, I still need a Xanax,lol.

And, I think calcium fortified wine sounds like a grand idea. Maybe Noble Pig can do that when she opens her winery.

My advice to the young......

Flash 'em while their sill high!!!!

Working out with hand weights is good for slowing/preventing osteoporosis.

Wine bottles are the perfect weight. Calcium-fortified wine? Perfect! Hoist a bottle!

flashing them while high I thought was great advice...will that help your bones...if it will I better start flashing...I know I need to have that test too dangit...and seriously I don't remember getting older...when did it happen???? I'm glad your daughter bought milk...I'm thinkin' I better buy a cow...all the diet coke I drink probably sucks my calcium right out of my bones....

And if you are taking calcium, the body can only absorb so much at one time. If you to take 1000 (whatever they ares like I do), get the 500 (whatevers--). I was taking both tablets at breakfast for 10 years. Finally my doctor says, "You know it's great that you take your calcium, but you should really take 500 in the morning and 500 in the evening, because the body can only absorb so much." Now she tells me. You'd think they'd tell you that when they tell you to start taking the stuff. Now I have to remember twice a day to take it. Arrrgh! Getting old sucks.

Great information here...good things to know.

Does ice cream help? I need an excuse.

I do believe what you said (above) is the reason that every time I look at myself in a mirror I am simply amazed at that old woman looking back at me!
I certainly AM NOT that old! HA!

Can't you take supplements? They helped my mominlove tremendously...

Right now they have me taking Citracal with Vitamin D. I feel like it's the equivalent of eating a band-aid.

You realize what this means.... no more drunken attempts at cartwheels or any other such folly. But, I'd already figured that one out anyway.

I'm there with that stranger in the mirror! I have no idea how she snuck into the house.

I'm in denial on the osteo. The steroids that I've taken off and on for the last 6 years cause osteoporosis so I figure I'm screwed no matter what. Time for a calcium supplement I guess...

I Know! When is America going to wake up and include calcium with vitamin D in cocktails, beer & wine? Helloooo... Start thinking *out of the box* people.

I'm glad you have brought this enlightenment to the cocktail industry. Boniva can be brutal. I have a tough time even with extra calcium. It's such a delicate balance. That's why this is a job for a top-notch mixologist!

Thanks for reminding me to take my calcium and vitamins today. Along with the other six darn pills I take every morning.

I know I'm bound to have osteoporosis as I am lactose intolerant so get little to none of Vitamin D except in my centrum silver. And when did I become old enough to take a SILVER multivitamin?

Does calcium make anyone else sick to their stomach? I feel just like I did that first 3 months of pregnancy..blech.
Hey Snooty you won the giveaway! Come over and give me your address so I can send you some goodies.

Just wanted to add something. Years ago around the age of 25 or so I can remember my mother telling me "you better exercise now and lose some weight, cause once your past 40 it's very very hard to do". Well why the hell didn't she make me exercise instead of just telling me?

WomenBloom said...

Yep, got the same lecture from my doc a few months ago, got to bump the calcium up (yes, WITH vitamin D). It does suck, but at least it's invisible, until you break a hip I guess. There are other parts of this menopause thing that are so much more immediately problematic that taking a pill a few times a day seems like a walk in the park. :)

I've known people who were older than you...but not many.

OMFG. I don't even drink milk. Well, except in White Russians... so maybe if I drink 6, 8 oz. glasses of white russians a day then I won't have osteoporosis? Of course, my liver won't be worth a shit then... so... eh... what to do?
