It's Been A Bit Windy Here... I Still Think It's Windshear From The Alien's House

I can honestly say that the ONLY time I like excessive wind is when I'm sailing on a lake in a sailboat. Period. So, I guess you could say that I don't like wind. That's not to say I don't mind a nice steady wind to blow in and carry my golf ball a bit further now and then. But, I'm really good at cursing the wind when it blows damage into our lives. Today has been a day of damage and I'm very sad about our loss. I'm saddened for anyone who has had to experience these dangerously high winds and their effects throughout the region. I shouldn't be complaining. They had it much worse in Oklahoma. Tornadoes, which scare me to the bone. I've been through plenty of them.

Anyway, all soccer games were cancelled, and frankly, any outdoor activity was wisely cancelled. Air flights were cancelled. Our dinner plans were cancelled. By us. Fine. Call me an old fart, but these winds (with the sandy dirt) are brutal. I have a migraine headache from Hell and none of my allergy medications are cutting it. I think I need Roto-Rooter for my nasal passages. If you don't have allergies anywhere else, you would surely have them here, when the wind blows anyway....

So, my favorite Texas Laurel that stood out by the guest house in back, popped it's top tonight, in the wind. The gusts have been up to 65 mph and just caught it off guard. I'm sure it put up a good fight. I will miss that tree so much!

Unfortunately, it did not die a quick, easy death. There is still some *limbage* left. It looks rather like a huge slingshot with no center. Well, when the carcass of the dead is finally removed. Neighbors beware if I locate a giant rubber band.

This is what our Texas Laurel looked like last summer when Felicia The Fox made one of her appearances. I really loved that tree. *Sniff*

So... I made a quick Beef Pot Pie with leftover beef stew and it looks as if it's going to be quite tasty. I had a couple of ready-made pie crusts in the freezer, so it was a cinch after adding a quick (apparently too quick) egg wash. Wind Schmind.

Beef pot pie...yum! I am so going to steal your idea. I've never thought of using leftover stew that way. Of course, now I'll have to make stew!

Sorry about your tree and the wind. I had to make all the requisite calls to check on family in OK last night...got everyone but our oldest on the phone. Guess who's getting a wake-up call today?

I hate wind as well. I figure in a past life I must have been taken out by a tornado or something similar. We've been through one major hurricane here in CT (Gloria in '85). It would have been so much easier for me if I'd had a steady supply of Valium.

I am so sorry about your tree. It always makes me sad to see a tree go down in a storm. Glad you and yours are safe;)

Sorry to hear you lost your precious tree. I hate high winds as well, unless I have clothes on the line. But then again, I want them to stay there.

As for the tornadoes, they scare the bejesus out of me, but excite me all at the same time. After last years storm chasing by accident, a huge part of me longs for that adrenaline rush again.

I heard about all the winds in Oklahoma and Texas on the news last night. Immediately thought about my bloggy friends.

So sorry about your tree, but glad you are okay!

Nothing like a little beef pot pie to ease the pain of losing your favorite tree... ;)

Thanks for thinking of us people up here in tornado alley!

I want some of that pot pie.

I hope you got in touch with your family in Edmond and they're all ok.

That tree was so full and pretty, wind just pisses me off.

#5: Did I mention that I want some of that pot pie?

Have a good 'un!

Sorry about your beloved tree. During Hurricane Isabel, the winds got really bad. My oldest son who was 11 at the time, yelled to me ...

S: "Mom, we have a tree in the back yard!"

M: "No, we don't."

S: "We do now!"

The whole tree popped up out of the ground, came up and over a 12 foot fence not even touching it once and came crashing down into our back yard.

The meat pie looks so yummy!

Sad about the tree :(
Hope you're getting through the windy days with minimal casualties. I don't miss the dust storms!

The beef pot pie looks tasty. We had some really strong wind this afternoon. It actually blew the courthouse doors open. Scary, but no tornado. Our worry now is flooding. With the foot of snow melting a few days ago and the rain we've had since yesterday, we're water logged. Poor Texas Laurel.

I hate wind more than any other type of weather...I would have cancelled dinner too! Ugh.

it sounded like a helicopter was landing on my roof earlier...and now my little brother, several hours north of me, is saying he has no electricity and the house sounds like its blowing down. Craziness!!

Awww...I hate it when trees become casualties. Greensburg's trees still look alien from that tornado 2 years ago.

I'm hankering for some stew though now...

Sorry about your Texas Laural! It was a cute tree. We lost 4 trees in a bad windstorm a few years ago. One of them had been planted in honor of our son's birth, now it's gone! I hate losing trees!

That pot pie looks delish!

Awww... poor Laurel tree. Years ago I had a tree in my backyard succumb to the same fate. Damn wind.

BTW - yes, we are fine here. I am glad that your family in Oaktree are fine - that neighborhood really got hit hard. About 3 miles from us, but still too close for comfort.
