It's Official (For Now)...

Although she is still holding out for (at the very least) a transfer to UT-Austin School of Law, SD (Snooty Daughter) is going to attend Southern Methodist University Dedman School Of Law. I find this to be great news because I love Dallas and haven't spent much time there since SD was in high school and we went there every weekend for Club Soccer games, shopping and soccer tournaments. I'm not so sure SD shares my sentiments, but this is the way things have played out, come what may.

So, I'll be flying out to Los Angeles in August to help SD make the move back to Texas. I'm so excited to get her back in the state where she was born! She's been in Hollyweird long enough and now (like Tom Terrific) it's time to come home. Mr. Snoots thinks she could come back on her own but I'm just not comfortable with her making such a long drive alone, while pulling a trailer. So, I'm going out to help her move back anyway. I'll feel ever so much better once she's back in Texas and I swear I'll leave her alone after that. (Yeah, right. Like that's going to happen.)

On our long drive back to Texas we'll be spending the night in Phoenix at The Arizona Biltmore, where I've always wanted to stay. Luckily, prices at hotels all over Arizona are at an all-time bargain rate... little wonder why. Personally, I think it's time for everyone in this country to stand up against illegal immigration. If it continues at the rate it's been going, we'll just end up being an extension of Mexico. Ten years ago when my kids were in middle school, they were the minority because of the massive amount of Latinos. By the time they entered high school, they were once again the majority because something like 70% of the Latinos drop out of school by the time they hit 10th grade. Can you imagine what it must be like now? No wonder private and alternative schools are popping up everywhere. It drags down many a top notch school to have students who are only there because they have to be, by law.

At any rate, SD will once again be a minority at SMU Dedman Law School because she is a woman. However, I think their students are pretty diverse and evenly representative of a colorful array of races.  Just think, this girl might one day represent someone important in a court of law...

Once we arrive back here (meaning home sweet home), we'll find a few pieces of furniture for her new place, load them in the trailer and then we'll leave for Dallas, where her new apartment awaits. From that point on, it's study, study, study and work, work, work! Our (ex) Galveston friends have been selling off all of their extra furniture from their 2 beach houses and have some nice things for SD to choose from. We're also hoping that hubby's cousin's husband hires her at his Dallas law firm, although if that doesn't happen, we have no doubts SD will find her own niche somewhere. She's great like that and has an incredible work ethic.

She is the light of my life. Prayers that she gets into UT Law are still being accepted and appreciated....

I'm Not Busy... Really I'm Not

So, I'm still not finished with decorating for Christmas and I just received a huge load of sterling silver that I have to identify and list in my shop, for a friend. I get exhausted just looking at the pile. However, I spent the weekend identifying like 65% of it, which is good. That gives me a good start to getting it listed and sold, which are both very time consuming.

I spent the better part of today cleaning & polishing items, printing out receipts & shipping labels, wrapping said items for shipping, boxing them up & that whole routine and sent out notices with tracking numbers.(Did I mention I pack items for guerrilla warfare?) Then I went to post office to mail everything and stood in line for more than 20 minutes. Grrrr!  USPS fired retired my long time post office workers (we're talking 20+ years here... all 3 of them). That's your government at work, folks! Now they have a couple of Doh! heads working there who can't decide whether they should scratch their watches or wind their butts.

Then I had this profound epiphany. I scraped up a memory from the bottom of my brain that told me I could ship from home for no extra charges. What? How could I have forgotten this? Let's just blame it on menopause, shall we?

With the click of my mouse I can schedule a free pick-up from my home, by my postal carrier. I mean, is this a great country, or what? So, tomorrow they will be picking up the other packages I have going out. This is just so kewl. It saves me time and money, even if they are charging me the customer more than ever.

Today I shipped out an antique Sheffield silver plate cream and sugar set with their own silver plated carriage. In addition to that, I also shipped out a lovely sterling silver compote and a vintage Lenox porcelain low bowl

I also shipped out daughter's application forms for law school. It took two boxes and around $20.00 to ship. Guess I won't wait so long the next time. Please say a prayer for me that she gets accepted at University of Texas Law School. Because if she doesn't, she going East Coast on me and I just don't think I could bear having her that far away again. I so badly want her home, here in Texas. She took two more practice tests of the LSAT and did better, with a 169 and a 170, but I think it might take a bit more than that. You know. Like perfect.

Fortunately, there is so much more to her than test scores. I think they should know that. Things like how stubborn and hard-headed she is. Or how she loves to argue (and she's good at it). Her wit and sarcasm are as sharp as a freshly honed knife. Or how people are just naturally drawn to her. When she was three years old, she rode in the tube behind our boat, all the way across Lake Buchanan (about 30 minutes) and still refused to get out. If you don't have these qualities, then you don't have what it takes to be a lawyer, right? Right? Well, I think so.

Lately, I've been selling more from my shop than ever. I guess that should be puzzling, but somehow it isn't. I just wasn't quite prepared to be so busy! Last night I fell into bed and never once woke up until I'd gotten eight hours. I think that might be a record for me....
