As you know, our daughter came home on crutches due to an ankle injury. Yesterday, she went to my orthopedic surgeon who promptly sent her to the hospital for more x-rays because he thought the pain she has was caused by a blood clot. Sure enough, at the hospital, they told her she did indeed have a blood clot. Then, we had to get her in to see our wonderful GP doctor. She was still at his office at 6:30 PM. He then told her that he wanted her in the hospital so they could give her the Hepacin or Heparin or whatever the heck it's called (blood thinner) through an IV. We were so lucky that he is on call for the holidays.
The sad thing is that she cannot eat anything high in potassium, which translates to NO pumpkin pie, no twice baked potato casserole, and no alcohol. I can't begin to tell you how thrilled she is about all this. I just keep telling her that she's lucky to be alive at this point. While I'm sure she doesn't want to hear it, that is the reality of it.
So, by 7:30 PM she was safely ensconced at the hospital, in a private room no less. The tears began. She was not happy. Mainly because last night was the big costume party, which we all missed. But, that's life, isn't it? She probably would have gone to the party if she had not been admitted to the hospital, so I personally feel that it was a good thing. If the blood clot had dislodged it could have killed her, which is something a bullet proof 23 year old finds difficult to believe.
While Mr. Snoots was busy getting our daughter checked into the hospital I drove out to the airport to fetch elder son. Once I had collected him, we went up to the hospital to see the daughter. She was, of course, throwing a fit over being there so I had to tell her to *can it*. Which she cannot do (oh dear, she really is too much like me). Perhaps she has my claustrophobia issues as well.
Sometime before she graduated from college, Snooty Daughter learned that she she could cry and throw fits to get her way, which works a great deal of the time (not with us though). However, it did not work this time. She called this morning wanting to come home (hey, it's Christmas Eve, right?) and crying. We told her that she could not leave until the doctor releases her. Hello. It's been that way since the beginning of time.
So, then our wonderful doctor called and said he was ready to release our baby. He gave instructions to go by his office and pick up the prescription, then get it filled at Wallgreen's. We will probably see her sometime late this afternoon. Wallgreen's takes their sweet time and is always backed up on filling prescriptions. I have a good friend who is a nurse that is going to come by and give SD the shots (in her stomach, no less). I can't do and I know she can't. God knows Mr. Snoots can't either.
The thing I'm really angry about is the fact that her idiot doctor in California dropped the ball completely. She could have died and he should have known there was something going on with her having so much pain. At the very least, he should have given her a *boot cast*, which she finally got yesterday from my orthopedist. This girl has the highest threshold for pain of anyone I've ever known. Anyway, now she has to find another doctor out in L.A. and our doctor didn't have anyone he could suggest (I honestly thought they all knew each other). So, if anyone knows of a good GP in L.A. please let me know. I don't want her going to another crackpot.
So, she must have two shots of Hepacin every day and on Friday she has to go have more blood work done and then see our doctor again. Fun, fun, fun till the Doctor took her freedom away....
Anyway, I hope everyone is having a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and avoid blood clots at all costs!

Poor Snooty Daughter. Tell her to rest and take extra special care. My mother was killed by a rogue blood clot that came up from her leg and hit her heart and lungs. They are not to be scoffed at!
I hope you're all able to enjoy the holiday now that you'll be together!
Merry Merry!
Not all visits to the hospital are bad on Christmas. My daughter was born on 12/23 and my husband and I left the hospital on Christmas morning - couldn't ask for a better gift.
Diane: Yes, I tried to explain to her how serious this deal is, but she's bullet proof you know...
Lady Golfer: Well, I had not even thought of that aspect since daughter was on the other side of the hospital from maternity. I'll bet that was a wonderful Christmas! And hey, I also bought myself some goodies for Christmas from your website & I love them!
How wonderful that you found out the problem...one day soon bulletproof SD will thank you for your insistence! (hard word to spell, that) Glad she will be home for the festivities albeit alcohol, pumpkin pie and potato casserole free. Alive is good, very, very good! Merry Christmas to all the Snooty household. God bless.
Oh, Snooty what a scary thing to have happen. Sometimes it's really frustrating when the Doctor doesn't seem to get what's up. I'm so glad that she will be back at your home for Christmas.
Hope you guys have a wonderful day. Enjoy having both of the kids at home!
Merry Christmas to you and yours, Snooty! Good to know that your kids will be home!
How awful for Snooty daughter. I hope all turns out well.
Have a Wonderful Christmas:)
I'll have to come back tomorrow to catch up on the rest.
Thank God he found it. Blood clots are deadly, deadly, deadly.
Merry Christmas;)
Merry Christmas to the Snoots! I'm glad that the doctor was able to find your daughter's trouble and deal with it before it became a more serious problem. Maybe she is bulletproof 8=)
Wow. Scary. At least she's on heparin...and the cumadin I'm assuming. Glad she's alright, if it would have gone to DVT (deep vein) it's very dangerous. Lots of experience over here with blood clots if you have any questions...Merry Christmas to you!
Holy Crapoly! I am just now reading a few blogs in a rare moment of no interruptions here in the land of looneys. SNOOTY DAUGHTER!! OMG! I am soooo glad you got her in to see your doctor stat and that he found the blood clot. How scary! The big guy upstairs is smiling down on all of you to make sure that wasn't missed.
SD - I hope you still had a great Christmas. Thankfully the stay in the hospital was brief and their treatment will take care of the LIFE THREATENING clot.
Snooty - I imagine you probably wanted to drink SD's share of alcohol once the reality of this scare hit you.
Glad you are all together and hope you're enjoying each other's company. I am so glad SD is okay! And yes - someone, find her a good doc in California!
Hugs to you - Merry Christmas!
Elder Son had to have those shots and it wasn't bad. Warning - they don't mix well with certain pain pills, and actually caused more problems, which is another story altogether.
If SD is taking anything else, please have your nurse friend look up the contraindications.
I'm glad SD is at home, and doing well.
It's certainly never boring around there, is it?
Snooty, Wow, that's all I can think of. Poor girl...little Miss Snooty, I mean. Poor you! I'm glad all is working out ok.
I love your poem btw. All I want for Christmas is a little botox ;)
I would just keep her here until I know for sure that there's nothing else wrong. heck, just let her know she can never go back...LOL
Thank you for your well wishes...it made me smile...I still feel lousy and that frustrates me a lot.
Love ya,
Marlene
Thank God for your wonderful doctor and that he found the clot!!
urgh, blood clots at Christmas? Good advice, stay away from blood clots :) Merry Christmas Snooty!
you tell your princess to behave, my clot went undiagnosed for days and once FINALLY diagnosed it had broken off and lodged in my lung!!! After reading your blog for a long time I have a feeling you can scare the begeezers out of her!! :) Better safe than sorry, take if from the blood thinner queen! Happy Holidays!
California and daughters do not go well. Mine had a narrow escape from a burst appendix while visiting there a few years ago. I'm thrilled your daughter made it through her ordeal so well.
